Brandalism: 600 ad takeovers in Paris before the COP21 Climate Conference

Two days before the launch of the UN COP21 Climate Conference, 600 posters were installed by the Brandalism project in outdoor media spaces across Paris. 82 Artists from 19 different countries made artworks to challenge the corporate takeover of COP21 and to reveal the connections between advertising, the promotion of consumerism and climate change.
Amidst the French state of emergency banning all public gatherings following the terrorist attacks on 13 November in Paris, the Brandalism project has worked with Parisians to insert unauthorised artworks across the city that aim to highlight the links between advertising, consumerism, fossil fuel dependency and climate change. 
The artworks were placed in advertising spaces owned by JC Decaux - one of the world’s largest outdoor advertising firms and an official sponsor to the COP21 climate talks.
Other prominent corporate sponsors of the climate talks such as Air France, GDF Suez (Engie) and Dow Chemicals are parodied in the posters – whilst heads of state such as Francois Hollande, David Cameron, Barack Obama, Angela Merkel and Shinzo Abi also feature. The artworks were created by over 80 renowned artists from 19 countries across the world including Neta Harari, Jimmy Cauty, Banksy-collaborator Paul Insect, Escif and Kennard Phillips – many of whom featured at Banksy’s Dismaland exhibition in England this summer. 
Joe Elan from Brandalism said, “By sponsoring the climate talks, major polluters such as Air France and GDF-Suez-Engie can promote themselves as part of the solution – when actually they are part of the problem.”

"Climate 01" a project by Andreco in Paris, France

Our friend Andreco just launched CLIMATE 01, an itinerant and international public art project about climate changes, their causes and their impacts.
As the starting point of this journey, Paris is the scene of a two-acts creation. The first project is the installation of a 5meters-tall wooden sculpture in the Jardin partagé Beaudelire, a community garden located in an empty lot of Rue Baudelique in the 18th district. The second stage of this project is a brand new mural that represent the water and CO2 cycles. This mural can be seen on the façade of Richomme Primary School, in the 18th district, in the very heart of the historical and multiethnic neighborhood known as "La Goutte d'Or".

Mygalo creates new pieces on the streets of Paris, France

Constantly active on the streets of Paris, Mygalo has been rather busy with a brand new series of artworks which popped up all over the city of lights.
These new pieces shows his obsession around the color Blue. In this series he talks about addictions, sex or racism. His topics relates to our society and human being. Mygalo tries to show all of the failures that are making people exist and sometime creates a violent conflict.

Ludo unveils a series of pieces on the streets of Paris

The last couple of weeks, Ludo has delivered a couple of sweet pieces and a great solo exhibition which took place in New York City.
Moving on, Ludo is back in Paris, France where he took over the streets of his hometown with a series of brand new artworks. Using oversized pasters and green paint, Ludo once again created a series of mutating creatures mixing the nature and humankind into a new hybrid.

"Earth Crisis", a new installation by Shepard Fairey @ the Eiffel Tower, Paris

Shepard Fairey is currently in Paris, France where he just unveiled his latest installation "Earth Crisis", an environmentally themed giant sphere hung between the first and second floor of the legendary Eiffel Tower.
Visible from November 20 to 26, it is a strong artistic gesture to Paris which will be hosting the COP21 world conference on climate change. This was made possible with the help of Gallerie Itinerrance.
The Earth Crisis Globe is a mandala designed to provide a unified ornamental structure that evokes floral motifs and harmony with nature.  Housed within the mandala’s shields are images that symbolize both threats to nature and incitement to respect it.  The mandala images, composed of climate change and environmentally themed graphics, are positioned to raise awareness and provoke discussions about the Earth’s future.  The colors used in the globe design connect blue and green of air, water, and vegetation that allow the earth to sustain life.

My political stance on protecting the planet is driven by my concern for the quality of life for future generations.  I’m not an alarmist, but I do think people need to understand that we are facing an earth crisis.  I think it is exciting that the globe provides different experiences for the viewer from a distance and up close while living in the heart of the Eiffel Tower.  I hope the Earth Crisis Globe appeals visually but also generates a needed conversation about the fate of our planet.

Hopare paints a new mural in Bayonne, France

Hopare is now in the South-West of France where he just finished working on a large piece on the streets of Bayonne.
Invited by the "Centre d’Art Spacejunk", the French artist created one of his signature portraits combining abstract lines and graffiti elements into one. If you are in the area, you'll be able to find it on 10 Quai De Lesseps.

A giant portrait by Jorge Rodriguez Gerada in Paris 13th, France

The masters of portraits Jorge Rodriguez Gerada is currently in Paris, France where he just opened his latest exhibition "L'Eternel Instant Present" with the good lads from the Gallery Matgoth.
Working in the 13th district at 63, rue Nationale, the Cuban-American painter spent 4 days to complete this stunning 20 meters high portrait. For the project, the local residents were given the choice in between three different portraits, the winning design ended up to be Jorge's wife Ana.

"Music For The Eyes", a new street piece by Hopare in Paris, France

After a few hours of work, Hopare just finished working on a quick new piece on the streets of his hometown, Paris in France.
Entitled "Music For The Eyes" and painted with just a few cans of black Spray paint, the French street artist delivered this simple yet super effective eye piece which will surely be enjoyed by the local residents.

"It's Forbidden To Forbid", a new mural by Hyuro in Niort, France

Our friend Hyuro just got back from France where she was invited to paint a large mural somewhere on the streets of Niort for Le 4eme Mur Festival.
The piece is entitled "Il Est Interdit D'interdire" (It's Forbidden To Forbid).

"This wall doesn’t speak solely through context, but it does speak about our time. It tells of human beings, immigrants or refugees alike, any person who for any number of reasons feels the need to move somewhere else. It speaks of our innate indifference to distance and our lack of interest for nameless and faceless people. It speaks to the internal contradiction between principles, rights, and our own self interests." --Hyuro

"Liberation", a street piece by Levalet in Paris, France

Constantly busy on the streets of Paris, Levalet is back with a brand new artwork which is entitled "Liberation".
The French artist stormed the 11th district of Paris with this oversized paster showing one of his monochrome characters placing a bomb on an historic building. The sign on the right says that 4000 freedom fighters were jailed  during the German occupation.

Invader brings a series of fresh invasions to the streets of Paris

our buddy Invader is enjoying the Parisian summer in France where he spent a few nights outside to work and install on a bunch of new invasions.
The anonymous French artist brought to life some of his signature tiny pixel-based creatures including a two larger-scale pieces featuring a smurf on mushrooms and a cute pixelated-flower.

David Walker creates a giant mural in Nancy, France

Berlin-based David Walker is currently in France where he just finished working on a mega piece somewhere on the streets of Nancy.
Abiding by self-imposed constraints, such as using no brushes or stencils, the British street artist pushes his unique direction with yet another superb street piece which is his biggest to date.
The city of Nancy is most famous for the "Place Stanislas", named after the last duke of Lorraine, It also has many buildings classified as historical monuments and is one of the centres of the "Art Nouveau" movement with "L'Ecole de Nancy" (the Nancy School).

After one year of negotiations with the new mayor and supporter of the arts Laurent Hénart, Galerie Mathgoth secured this first step to bring urban art to the more aesthetically challenged parts of the city.

Levalet unveils "Public Service " a new piece in Paris, France

Sowat and Lek unveil a new piece in Saint-Etienne, France

Sowat and Lek are currently in Saint-Etienne in France where they just finished working on a new piece for "Le Mur Saint Etienne". The duo was invited by Ella & Pitr.
The idea behind the work was to produce was to create a modern and abstract war banner. To do that, working in the studio lent by Ella & Pitr, Sowat spent the first night tracing black bits and pieces of deconstructed letters with dripping paint brushes that Lek covered the next day with gold circles and lines. Once everything was dry, we proceeded to carefully place the piece on top of its designated billboard...

Craig Costello for the Lasco Project at Palais De Tokyo in Paris, France

For the Lasco Project's 4th edition, Hugo Vitrani and the Palais de Tokyo continue to explore the urban arts by providing new york artist Craig Costello with a new space to take over.

„When I used to write, the dripping was my signature. Today it’s not about writing my name anymore. By removing the writing from the equation I got even more interested in the drips: they trundle along freely according to the wind, the inclination, the gravity and the different textures of the support. It’s a very organic process.“

Craig Costello aka Krink deploys his monumental extinguisher paintings on the Palais de Tokyo outside arches.  His abstract landscapes get freezed through a movement of both delicateness and violence. His radical technique doesn’t allow any second chance. 

On the wide 50 meters long and 10 meters high surface of  he Arches Wilson, Craig Costello brings his painting face to face with the old stones and the wild ever-present nature. He draws a long path similar to a procession in a subway tunnel filled with a powerful baroque light.

The Palais de Tokyo decided in 2012 to dedicate part of its programme to urban arts. The Lasco Project was born. Interventions by artists in the bowels of the Palais’ building have since been inscribing the street into art history. Since December 2012, roughly sixty international talents have been part of the action, including Futura 2000, O’Clock, Mode 2, Boris Tellegen, Dran, Skki, Evol, Vhils, Azyle, Horfée and Ken Sortais, duo Lek & Sowat as well as Cleon Peterson to name but a few. The project is curated by Hugo Vitrani.

Alber paints a new piece in Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux-based Alber just sent us some images from his newest street piece which was just completed on the streets of his hometown.
Specialising on painting characters on walls, the French artist quickly painted these two portraits which are showing two of his unique signature characters.

Jana & Js create a new mural in Lille, France

While we last heard from them in Paris a few days ago, Jana & Js are currently in Lille, France where they just finished working on this mural.
In town for the Biennale Internationale d'Art Mural" organised by the Collectif Renart, the French-Austrian duo created some of their signature imagery for the locals to enjoy.
Jana & Js are a street art duo currently based in Austria who specialize in detailed stencil work, frequently depicting people with cameras or couples sharing intimate moments.

David De La Mano paints a large mural on the streets of Paris in France

David De La Mano spent the last week in Paris, France where he was invited to work on the side of a large building in the 13th district of the city.
The Spanish street artist brought to life this massive monochrome artwork showing the outlines of a face which is composed by a gazillion of black silhouettes slowly regrouping together. Unity makes strength!

Shaka paints a new piece in Toulon, France

The "Le Mur Toulon" Street Art project recently welcomed Shaka to paint a new piece on the streets of Toulon in France.
The French artist quickly worked his way through this beautiful piece showing some of signature imagery with this flying body. As usual with Shaka, his 3D-like pieces seems to be pushing away from the wall trying to free themselves from the 2D environment.
